After years in process improvement I came to understand that I had a passion to help people discover and make better their processes and how they worked together. Although I worked in IT, I noticed that my proclivity knew no barriers.
The realization came after years of high school car washes. They were for the band, or the lacrosse team. Ostensibly they were FREE, but I knew better. It was for a good cause and I could not resist. Even if rain was in the forecast.
The regular donation was around $10. But I got in the habit of doubling that. For $20 I felt that I had bought license to talk about their 'process'. I never really had to suggest anything. Being a good consultant I knew that making a few observations and asking a couple of good questions might lead my 'client' in the right direction.
"Quite a lot of kids you have here today" I might say. "I see a lot of them standing around with idle hoses." I might add, retorically. "Did you notice the line of cars out to the street?"
One time, maybe they thought about starting a second line of cars. That would have been a very happy day. But I enjoyed it every time, regardless. I had made a contribution to the community and exercised my soul.
A good day, indeed.
